Shuhari+School Introduction

Shuhari(守・破・離) Pronunciation: Shu-ha-ri ⸻

Shuhari is a traditional Japanese concept describing the three stages of mastery in martial arts and classical disciplines:

• Shu (守) — Learn the fundamentals by faithfully following the teachings.

• Ha (破) — Break from tradition to develop deeper personal understanding.

• Ri (離) — Transcend the forms to create one’s own path.

At our school, we honor the spirit of Shuhari in all our teachings. Starting with Kenjutsu (swordsmanship), students may also study Iaido, Kobujutsu, Ninjutsu, and Jujutsu, learning not only techniques, but also discipline, respect, and self-growth through martial arts.

Kenjutsu is the traditional Japanese art of swordsmanship, developed by samurai over centuries of battlefield experience.

Modern kenjutsu focuses on practicing forms (kata) and paired drills, emphasizing correct posture, focus, breathing, and etiquette.

It is not just about technique, but also a path of mental and spiritual discipline.

Kobudo, or classical Japanese martial arts, refers to the traditional combat arts developed before the modern era.

It includes disciplines such as kenjutsu (swordsmanship), jujutsu, iaido, sojutsu (spear), kyujutsu (archery), and ninjutsu.

These arts emphasize not only effective techniques, but also deep respect, etiquette, and personal development through disciplined practice.
